Johnson Small with his Australian Cattle Dogs, Dirt and Mud

About

Stories from the dirt up

Dirty Blue Heeler is a collection of short stories told from the perspective of my two Australian Cattle Dogs, Dirt and Mud. They're not really about dogs — they're about mental health, relationships, self-care, and the small, often-overlooked lessons hiding in everyday life.

I started it in April 2023 as a creative outlet. What began as a fun writing exercise quickly became something bigger — a weekly practice in vulnerability, storytelling, and paying attention to the world around me. A new story goes out every Thursday.

Each week I also send The Mud, a short dispatch with something I've been thinking about, something I've been doing, and something worth discussing together.

A portion of all membership revenue goes directly to no-kill animal shelters. The dogs that save us deserve to be saved right back — members choose which shelter receives their contribution.

The best way to get in touch is to reply to any issue of The Mud. I read every response.
