Johnson Small with Dirt and Mud

Johnson Small

I write short stories from the perspective of my two Australian Cattle Dogs, Dirt and Mud. They're not really about dogs — they're about mental health, relationships, self-care, and the small, often-overlooked lessons hiding in everyday life.

Every Thursday I publish a new story. If you're looking for a community that meets you where you are, you're in the right place.

I started Dirty Blue Heeler in April 2023 as a creative outlet. What began as a fun writing exercise quickly became something much bigger — a weekly practice in vulnerability, storytelling, and paying attention to the world around me.

Dirt was a pain in the ass as a puppy. He was every bit a typical Blue Heeler — stubborn, intense, and relentless. Mud came along later, a rescue from a flooded November in 2020. Together, they taught me more about patience, consistency, and showing up than any book or class ever could.

A portion of all membership revenue goes directly to no-kill animal shelters. I believe the dogs that save us deserve to be saved right back.
