Here's The Deal...

Here's The Deal...

by Johnson Small

A few months ago I had a terrible nightmare. President Biden called a Special Report to tell the world about this guy writing short-stories about the daily life lessons he learns from his dogs.

“This is an NBC News Special Report. Here’s Lester Holt...”

“Good afternoon. We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to take you to the White House where President Biden has called an immediate press conference concerning a young writer who believes he has something worth sharing. Here’s the President…”

“My fellow Americans. First, let me apologize for interrupting you in the middle of Days Of Our Lives. Like many of you, I am dying to know why Belle punched EJ and if Jada knows Shawn is cheating on her with Lauren, but there’s an important issue at hand that affects all Americans.”

He removes his aviator sunglasses, looks dead at the camera, “there’s a writer in South Carolina writing short-stories about the daily lessons he’s learning from his dogs, Dirt and Mud.”

He pauses, grins and continues…

“I believe his idea to write these stories is almost as terrible of an idea as the names he chose for his dogs. It’s for this reason, I’m issuing an executive order, to boycott, laugh and point at this writer and his dogs, effective immediately.”

For two days I had to remind myself it was only a dream. A very bad dream, but only a dream.

There is a lot of truth to that nightmare though. Thinking we have something to share is incredibly scary. Knowing some people won’t understand or maybe judge the idea, make it easy to avoid. But all the negative voices become silent when just one person feels something from our words.  Whether they laughed, cried, fell in love or started a petition to cut off our fingers, we find satisfaction knowing the words we wrote meant something.

If you got this email, you’re either someone I know, or you’re someone who signed up. Either way, we’re incredibly grateful and thank you for reading this far.

So here’s the deal. A couple years ago, I started writing and it’s been amazing (except for the grammar part, which I’m working on). The last eight months has been solely devoted to short-stories about the mischief Dirt & Mud get into and how it wildly resembles my life. I believe dogs reflect the best of us, if we’re willing to pay attention and these stories are my attempt at understanding those reflections.

We built a new website. It’s awesome. Dirty Blue Heeler. And starting next Monday (May 8), my goal is to write a story every couple days eventually working up to everyday. Always short enough to read in the time it takes to go to the bathroom. Some of the stories will have audio. We also have a place to comment at the end of each story, so don’t be shy.

Dirt & Mud wanted to make sure we do our part to put a little good in the world. This is our attempt at doing so. It ain’t much, but it’s something.

If you like a story, consider sharing it. If you don’t like a story, definitely share it.

We greatly appreciate your support, and welcome to Dirty Blue Heeler!

Sincerely,

Dirt, Mud, Oscar Johnson Small
